The other day I was having a conversation where someone was talking about one of the Church brethren and I said I loved that guy. It was only later that I realized that the Brother my priesthood leader was referring to was one with the same last name as the first name of a Brother I have a much closer relationship. I loved the wrong guy.
That started me thinking about a time over twenty years ago when I made a similar but much more memorable mistake. I was working as a hotel night auditor at the time and once in a while the guest would want to stand and chat after they checked out. I was having a conversation about American conservatism with an older gentleman and it was going smoothly. Then out of the blue he asked, “Do you like Rush?” I thought to myself: Rush is a great band. What I said though was, “I love Rush.” For the next fifteen minutes he talked about all the latest things Rush Limbaugh had been saying. I have never actually listened to an entire session of his radio program so I had absolutely nothing to add. He didn’t seem to notice and kept talking until I needed to check out the next customer. I should learn not to blurt out stuff like that but apparently I still haven’t.
