I am an avid video gamer. I started playing the Atari 2600 when I was seven years old. That was almost 50 years ago. I played the first generation of commercial video games when they were new. In my teens I bought a Commodore 64 with my own money along with an external floppy drive, an external cassette tape drive, and a few games. When I went off to a very expensive and very liberal college on the west coast I hid from the politics of the place and unfortunately my classes in the computer lab. I think I was playing on Mac2s there but the whole experience is hard to remember because it was all very depressing. I came back to my hometown and settled into a routine on someone else’s NES until I had enough money for a place of my own and upgraded to an SNES. I maintain to this day that this system is the best dedicated platform there ever was. You could run over those cartridges with a truck and they would still load. But maybe that’s just nostalgia for a time when my biggest responsibility was a part time job in fast food. I went off to college again and got married and move back to the aforementioned home town. Gaming all along the way. I am not as free as I was in my SNES days but I still manage to log a lot of hours on my favorite video games.
