I am always disheartened by people who can’t see how amazing modern life is. The world is phenomenally better than it was 200 years ago. I live a life now that couldn’t have even been dreamt of by kings then. I have clean hot and cold running water, a refrigerator to keep food fresh for weeks, central air so I’m warm in the winter and cool in the summer. And I have a vast connection to the people of the world and much of the aggregation of human knowledge at my fingertips.
I am also grateful for family and friends. That isn’t new or modern. Admittedly the modern world has diminished the power of extended families. It said that our technology has gone farther than our humanity. I can see that. But I don’t think the solution is to tear technology down. We are beginning to see diminishing returns for our investments in mechanization and need to focus on human virtue again. But I don’t want to abandon the new world. We need new paradigms and perhaps even new gods (and goddesses) to move our humanity towards divinity.
