Today I went to see my counselor. My anxiety and stress are low enough that I only need to go about once every month and a half. My mania and depression are under control with a cocktail of psychiatric medications. I try to be open and honest about these things because doing so serves two purposes beyond just venting. First of all there remains an incredible stigma in our culture about seeking help for mental health. I aim to help break that stigma by putting my struggles and successes in the eye of the public. Secondly I want people to know that they are not alone. One of the hardest parts of struggling with mental illness is that so many of us feel completely isolated. When I’m trapped in my head it’s easy to believe I’m the only one that this happens to. If you are reading this and thinking that no one know or cares, I want to express that I have been there and will be there for people who need to hear that. Reach out to a qualified mental health professional. Advocate for your self. And above all know that you are not alone.
