I don’t have much emotional investment in the average celebrity. We all will die, and when someone in Beverly Hills does my life is not going to be affected much. But this week I lost two “friends.” Growing up when I stayed home sick from school I would watch The Price Is Right. Bob Barker was a smiling and enthusiastic face when I couldn’t be one. He passed away at 99 years old. The joke is that he got as close to 100 without going over as a man could. He leaves me with good memories.
When I was living on the edge of society in the center of town I started listening to Jimmy Buffett. From Margaritaville to Why Don’t We Get Drunk And Screw he was an “inspiration.” But my favorite of his songs was He Went To Paris. I left a cover of the song on my YouTube channel a long time ago if you want to look it up. Again I have good memories at his passing.
I never met either man or even saw them perform live. I just don’t chase celebrities. I treat their works as gifts and hope that they and the men and women around them are justly compensated for the value they have added to my life. I will of course go on without them but their loss makes me a little sad. Hopefully they have taken the next step into an eternal universe and can continue to be awesome there.
