A Whole Year

Feeling out of place

My senior year of highschool was by most measures an awesome one for me. Friends, theater, music, the prospect of college, and even the student council presidency. So I was to say the least a shock when I got to the real world. Seven days after I graduated I entered Basic Training for the US Army. That was a culture shock that sent me into a psychological tail spin. I was out of place and there wasn’t much to do about it except power through. That was not something I had ever prepared to do. But somehow I made it through that summer. I got to college that fall and everyone thought I was a chemotherapy patient because the Army had shaved my head just before I left. But I found I was out of place there for other reasons as well. I was smart or at least I thought I was. But everyone else there was smarter and more motivated. I was still out of place and didn’t get over the depression that caused until years later. I was out of place for a whole year and it reminds me of who I really am to this day.
