History Lessons

What historical event fascinates you the most?

The historical event that most fascinates me is the appearance of Jesus Christ in the Americas after his resurrection. It is not largely recognized as historical but it is the most monumental thing that has happened to the human race apart from the resurrection itself. If Christ really did appear in the Americas, and I believe he did, it shows that God’s love is not confined to a small country on the western coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is for all of us everywhere.

My second choice (since no one argued it didn’t happen) is the American Revolution. My country has been good at war from the very beginning. That’s sometimes troubling to me. But the War for Independence and the American Civil War both seem just. It is amazing to look back to the founding of the United States and see how far we have come. Whichever of the two events you choose to believe was real, I testify that the Americas are the Promised Land.

  1. The American Revolution seems rather ironic to me. We fought a war for “no taxation without representation,” yet immediately denied representation to over half the population. We won the war but lost our purpose. And we still tax people who are not allowed representation.

    1. I see the Revolutionary War as the beginning of the quest for liberty in this country. We are still trying to live up to the ideals the Founders set in motion. I often wonder if they would be amazed or appalled at what this country has become. Theoretically more people than ever have access to government redress but on the other hand it is behind walls of red tape. Not many people have historically been interested in self governance because governing oneself is hard. I think the world is phenomenally, radically, and fundamentally better because of the American experiment and continue to hope that it can be revitalized. Part of that for me is the continued dissemination of the Book of Mormon. Whatever else the book might be it is quintessentially American.

  2. I hope the American experiment can be revitalized, but we seem to be moving towards imperialism rather than away from it.
