I worked the floor tonight and we had hundreds of last minute shoppers. I spend most of the evening on a cash register. It got me wondering how we ever got to this point in our culture where Christmas is a time for big sales and a lot of them. I suppose there’s a practical aspect to it that companies want to clear out as much of the year’s inventory as possible before the new year. But why do people go along with it? What possesses us to shop with reckless abandon? Why do we think somehow that the people we are shopping for are benefiting from the overpriced plastic we give them? How does any of it make sense for the consumer? It’s an old problem and one I didn’t solve tonight. Still worth pondering.
