I Swore An Oath

Are you patriotic? What does being patriotic mean to you?

When I was about to graduate high school I went to a Military Inprocessing Center (MEPS).  Before I left my father absolutely forbade me to sign anything there. But I was 18 and if I wanted to join the Army I was going to join the Army. That is one of only two times I really rebelled against my dad. The other is converting to Mormonism. But that’s a story for another day. I was 18 and the Army sounded like a good deal. Reagan was president and I loved him. The patriotic thing was to join the Army so I did. I swore an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies both foreign and domestic. I wasn’t really ready to die for my country but knew it was part of the deal. They taught me to kill for my country and I decided that if someone had to die I’d rather it be the other guy. I am fortunate that neither of those things happened, but I still consider that oath from time to time.

The one year anniversary of my blog is coming up. Check out where it all began: Here.
