Latter Day Sinner

The first time I tried college I had a group of friends who invited me to watch Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was a brand new series at the time and I knew almost nothing about it. Someone decided which character we were all going to be. I reminded the group of Lieutenant Worf who was the Klingon defense officer. I was the only one in the military so in retrospect that made a lot of sense. But I’d always been the smart one, the robot, the computer, in peer groups so I was disoriented at the time. Everyone else at college was a better fit for Commander Data than I was. But I’ve still identified with him through the years. Yesterday I learned that he was third in command after Picard and Riker. For thirty five years it had never occurred to me that he was so close to being in charge. But I’m Worf and I’m not in charge. I just get beat up to show how serious the situation is.
