Major Cities Are Not For Me

What place in the world do you never want to visit? Why?

I have lived in Portland and Milwaukee. Portland is a beautiful city until you get to the center of it. At its heart is just big, imposing buildings and asphalt. There are places where there aren’t even any sidewalks. I once took a long walk and had to climb across a shale cliff over an auto tunnel to get from the end of one sidewalk to the beginning of the sidewalk on the other side. Not a good place for a pedestrian like I am.

Milwaukee was better for walking and the food was good. But in the wooded areas I ended up in a homeless camp occasionally. They were just huge clearings full of blankets and garbage. I tried to not disturb anything as I passed through but it was always during the day so they didn’t have their residents. You should know if you’ve been following me here how much I want to help the homeless population but lack the resources. Again it was not a particularly good place.

So that brings us to the answer to today’s question. I don’t have one specific place but rather a kind of place. I don’t like the idea of going to big cities. The ones that come to mind right away are New York City, Los Angeles, Mexico city, and Tokyo. For the last one someone could probably twist my arm to change my mind. I’ve heard it’s not as dirty as the other three. There are other big cities I would like to avoid but those four are the best examples. I’ll probably go to Madison and Chicago again though. Those are close and I’d be in a car with somebody.
