We were a GM town

Janesville had a General Motors plant for almost a hundred years. Over that time the city got more and more car friendly and less and less pedestrian friendly. Cars were everything here. They were transportation, they were good paying union jobs, and they were freedom. But the plant closed years ago. The lot is an environmental hazard that no one has the political or financial will to restore. Still, the city is getting better for people to walk without the pressure of people making cars. The downtown area has really come to life in the past few years. We are still a Midwestern city. You need a vehicle to get to Madison or Milwaukee or Chicago. But here in town we are focusing on cars a little less and people a little more.
