What are your favorite brands and why?
I used to really like SoBe. They had a drink called Zen Blend which was awesome. When they discontinued it I switched to another one of their products. They discontinued that too and I switched to a third. When that one was discontinued I gave up on the brand.
But this post is about a brand I have never given up. Spam was something of a treat as a kid. I didn’t get it often but enjoyed it when I did. There’s a Monty Pythons Flying Circus sketch about a restaurant that serves Spam. It further endeared me to the brand. Now that I can buy Spam for myself I keep a few cans in the house most of the time. I follow Spam on Facebook and tease them about all the fancy ways they suggest that I prepare it. “Spam, can, spoon… satisfied grunts.”

“Satisfied grunts” rings true. I remember many deployments where anything that didn’t come out of a bag was treasured food. One of our Warrant Officers’ wife would send care packages, Spam included. Pan seared, broken up over rive with Thai peppers. After six months in the sticks, it was heaven.

In the past few years I’ve learned how much Hawaiians love Spam. It’s hard to keep meat fresh so getting it in a can is ideal. It’s strange to see some of the Asian American food with Spam as the centerpiece. But it makes sense. Enjoy your peppers.
