I know you are probably wondering who says those two words refer to the same being. Sadly it is The General Authorities of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints making the claim. I suppose if I tried real hard and squinted my eyes at the whole Old Testament I might be able to force myself to believe this false doctrine. But I don’t believe it. The god of the Old Testament is clearly a different god than the god of the New Testament. The Jewish people worship a different god than Jesus. I’m going to call that god Jehovah even though that’s a particularly un-Jewish designation. Jehovah is the god of the Jews and I repeat Jesus is not. To look at the Old Testament and conclude that the two are the same ends up in my mind like saying the Jews have accidentally and against their will been worshipping Jesus the whole time. A god that is simultaneously Jehovah and Jesus is a god of deception. That is not a god worthy of worship. I’d rather just worship two separate gods and hope that they are both honest and real.

Seems like a wise choice to me.

I think the God in the Old and New Testaments are the same. I think we got some things wrong in the Old Testament. The human depiction and interpretation can be questioned. Certainly we can’t take everything at face value.

I don’t find the doctrine of the Trinity particularly coherent. It’s just easier for me to worship three gods instead of trying to make them seem like one god in my head. But I do need to remind myself not to be so convinced that I know the nature of divinity that I can no longer progress in that knowledge.
