I reread The Declaration of Independence this afternoon. As much as I complain about how Democrats and Republicans are ruining the country, I am occasionally forced to admit that we don’t have nearly the sort of tyranny that would make men pledge their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to dissolve the Union. On the other hand one line stood out to me in particular: “He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.” The administrative apparatus that D.C. currently wields rivals the British monarchy at its height. C.S. Lewis complained about the soft tyranny of “omnipotent moral busybodies… who torment us for our own good… for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” We are again at that point in history.
