One of my daily habits is to listen to at least two hymns. Today I listened to “Have I done any good in the world today?”, “If you could hie to Kolob”, and “Come, come ye Saints.” The beginning of the last verse of the last song goes, “And if we die before our journey’s through/ Happy Day! All is well./ We then our free from toil and sorrow too/ With the just we shall dwell.” This is a beautiful idea if you believe it, but sometimes I have trouble believing it. Is it really a good thing to die in the fight for righteousness? Certainly if we have a choice we should live for it. And if the just go into the same cold hard ground as the unjust, then it isn’t much of a reward. It’s a beautiful hymn though.
