Some people have more self control than others. Some people have power over others. We are not free in an absolute sense. But if we only have the illusion of self control then that would be a strange twist of evolution. If we believe we are sentient and have the freedom to choose we are forced to ask for the inexplicable reason why the illusion persists.
Today I have been arguing about freewill and power and I’ve decided it is really the same argument. A person might be said to have personal power but if her control is only of herself then she doesn’t have power in any real sense. I assume that freewill is not a just maladaptive line in our in our evolution. Perhaps I’m wrong. Perhaps even those who control other only have the illusion of power. I doubt that and if everything is fixed then I am preordained to doubt that. You can’t win that argument with me.
