Free Markets and Losers

Stephanie and I are arguing about capitalism again. We are both bad at making and saving money. She doesn’t see that as a problem while I do. And she keeps saying I argue that “Capitalism is true.” I think it’s a strawman. My argument is that capitalism is effective in producing things that I desire, and the fact that I do not produce enough things that other people desire is the problem. My art has yet to pay the bills. I don’t even have a good way to sell it. In a free market that makes me a loser. She says I’ve already lost and should just give up. I will continue to fight while I still have fight in me.

  1. I did not say anything about you giving up. I didn’t even remotely imply that. That thought came entirely from you.

    1. That is obviously not how I remember the conversation.

      1. Obviously. First, what I said, was “from a capitalist perspective, you’re a failure.” I was also arguing that capitalism disempowers artists who remain authentic to their art and the art industries consume the artists they turn into products.

      2. And I don’t see the problem with that so long as I can keep the rights to my art and get a commission for its use. I have done this on many occasions but I am unsure how to scale those small successes.

  2. I don’t want you to give up art. I want you to stop self-destructively promoting capitalist ideology.

      1. Good. Recognize that creating art has adds value to the world that cannot be quantified and encourage the creation of a culture that values artists for their art instead of their exploitability.

      2. Generally people care about what I can give them. I can’t expect strangers to give a damn that they are “exploiting” me.

      3. A society that depends on the exploitation of its citizenry will never know peace. Just because you are willing to allow yourself to be exploited as the cost of living does not mean others will not continue to resist. My life is not of value because I am a thing to be used. My life has value because I matter as a person.

      5. When you are choosing how you serve your fellow man you are a less hostile and contentious person than you are when you feel put upon by your employer or manager. When you feel used rather than utilized you fight back. I can give you examples, but you probably don’t want me to make those public.
