The idea that we are not saved by the law is a pretty typically Christian one. The Law of Moses is dead. The extension of that is that we are alive in Christ. But I don’t think that only in Christ can we be alive. I think that a Jew who follows the spirit of the Law of Moses can progress in the eternities. And that’s where I think God casts a wider net than insisting that everyone worship the biblical Jesus to inherit kingdoms of glory. Saved is a very Christian word so I hesitate to use it in this context. Perhaps justified before God comes as close to what I mean as I can get. Jews can be justified before God. So can Muslims and probably occasionally Baha’i. The law that a Hindu or a Buddhist learns is very different from the Law of Moses, but they can still be justified by following the eternal spirit of their own laws. God wants everything human to live justly and gives each of us the chance. It is a choice and a work.
