Sometimes I doubt that there are gods or a God. The best arguments for the divine are largely unfalsifiable. Did Jesus miraculously rise from the dead? I don’t care if you believe he did or not but I hope you will see that to prove it one way or the other we would have to make some loaded assumptions. Did Jesus rise from the dead and appear in the Americas? I think he did but it’s no more or less provable than the resurrection. I am making assumptions that make sense to me but they are assumptions none the less.
But I digress. One of the assumptions I see when I start writing things like this is that humans should be creatures of pure reason. Science has led us into a new age, they say. Superstition has been put in the dustbin of history, they continue. Humans will be perfectly rational in the very near future, they prophesy. But I simply don’t believe it. The industrial revolution has not made people hyper rational. You may not think Jesus existed though the claim is very tenuous. You may not think he is God and in that you will find much company. You may even think there are no gods at all. That belief is becoming more popular. But Christianity still exists and is a powerful force in the world. If you are inclined to deny that then I have little hope for your ability to see that you have already failed in your quest for that mythical hyper rationalism.
