At one point a few years back I expressed my love for the Quran to the bishop of the ward. He had me set up a private council between his first counselor (who knows almost as much about Islam as I do) and the elders quorum president (who was there to observe). The counselor and I talked at length. He said he had almost recited the Shahada and then curiously he actually recited the Shahada. He warned me that the Quran was an evil book and insisted that millions of Muslims were deceived. My immediate correction was that there have been billions of Muslims not millions. But I have never bought the Christian lie that the Quran is a satanic book. He did say one thing that really stuck though. He said I was treating the Quran like an idol. That was and probably still is true. It is a common and curious phenomenon that the Quran is an exemption from “association” (shirk) which is the greatest sin in Islam. I carried that idolatry to the Book of Mormon as well. Sometimes the fact that these books exist is more important than what is actually in them. I love the books more than the lessons.
