I talked with another person today about Joseph Smith Jr saying that we should teach people correct principles and let them govern themselves. The saying is generally well received because most people believe that they have correct principles and want to govern themselves. The problem of course is that people don’t agree which principles are correct. Service to God for instance is an awesome principle to start with until people start arguing that everyone else is serving false gods. There are also people who don’t believe in any gods at all. I think I will quote Galileo and leave it for you to argue whether I am serving a false god or that I’m delusional to think there is a real God in the first place.

I think people have a great deal of trouble understanding that genuinely correct principles empowers people to govern themselves. But I also think people – including Joseph Smith Jr. – have trouble accepting that people are not going to “govern themselves” by submitting to their will.

There’s an argument that we shouldn’t believe Joseph Smith Jr when he says he’s talking for God just because he says he’s talking for God. The same argument is leveled at Mohammed. I generally resolve that by whether the fruits of the prophecy are good. As the years have gone by I become more convinced that the fruits of Brother Joseph are good by comparison to anything around it and less that the Arabian prophet teaches people to correct principles to govern themselves.
