There are some brilliant scientific minds that assert that I do not have a choice about anything. They insist that everything I do and think has been determined by the physics and chemistry that I have inherited. Every particle in the universe was, they say, set in motion during the big bang. I can’t do anything about my particles and I am just along for the ride according to these scientists and philosophers. They remind me of the Calvinists that insist that God predestined everything and that his omnipotence is the only reality. This is the state of scientific determinism. If my choice is an illusion then my belief in the reality of that choice is preditermined. It can be helped. I am who I am. If Calvin’s god does not incline me to worship him then it is his responsibility that I don’t. If my particles make me believe in freewill there is again no responsibility on my part to correct that.
