Literacy over Evangelism

I am not nor have I ever been a good evangelist. I am fully committed to the stance of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on moral agency. I can’t make choices for any of you and I’m certainly not in a position to tell people that they have to believe all the things I do. Don’t get me wrong because I am convinced my core beliefs are correct. But one of those core beliefs is that you have a God given right to learn from my wisdom or ignore it. One of the things I do insist on if someone is going to talk about my beliefs with me is that they are religiously literate or at least trying to be. I have read in their entirety: The Bible, The Quran, The Book of Mormon, The Tao te Ching, and the Bhagavad Gita. They form my core theological disposition. That said it should be pretty obvious why I don’t expect others to lock arms with me on my view of the divine. So for instance Stephanie has also read all five of those books in their entirety. I have remained a member of the LDS Church while she has left it to pursue Druidry. But our discussions are informed and usually fair. We are both religiously literate and that’s one of the few things I really ask of anyone who wants me to take them seriously.
