There is a strong strain of thought among my friends some of which disagree with each other vehemently that Jesus is on their side in political arguments. Jesus the socialists. Jesus the libertarian. Jesus the feminist. Republican Jesus. Democrat Jesus. That isn’t nearly an exhaustive list but I suspect you see my point. It is typical for Jesus to be portrayed as part of the culture that worships him. Long before Socialist Jesus there was European Jesus. Light skin, blond hair, and blue eyes. I’ve also seen art of Asian Jesus and African Jesus some of which is centuries or a millennia old. We want Jesus to be on our side. Right now in the United States people want to claim him in their political tribe. Jesus would favor this or that policy and if you don’t then you aren’t really a Christian. The gate keeping goes all the way back to the 4th century when Christianity became the state religion. I wonder if we would even have Christianity today if it hadn’t been politicized since then. The fact that I see no way to divorce Christianity from politics inclines me to divorce myself from Christianity.
