I Work for a Living

I had a short conversation with an ROTC cadet. He seemed competent so far as he’s been trained. Reminded me a little of myself 40 years ago. He called me sir at the end of the call and without thinking I said, “Don’t call me Sir. I work for a living.” The sergeants would tell me that when I was in ROTC. I never got cadet insignia so the one time a sergeant saluted me as a private it felt weird. But that was a long time ago. Bittersweet memories.

  1. I feel the same way when parents who outsource childcare to pursue their career ambitions ask me what I do.
I raise my kids. I am the formation director for my own kids.

    1. Exactly right. I suspect it is closer to true in my case because you don’t get paid for caregiving per se like Stephanie and I do.
