I have a love hate relationship with advertisements. I grew up in the 80s. I usually got about 10 minutes of show time for a minute and a half of ads. I know what I can do for a minute and a half while I’m ignoring ads playing. Today’s ads are very often voluntary in exchange for something. Discord gives me Orbs for watching ads. AdVenture Capitali$t gives me in game perks. Then there’s YouTube. Those ads are obligatory but skipable. They usually run for anywhere from 5 seconds to 30 before they can be skipped. That it turns out is my limit for just ignoring that there is an ad at all and doing something else. If I know an ad is two and a half minutes then I will put my phone down or get up from my computer and do something else while the ad runs. I doubt anyone who cares will read this but the optimum length for an ad is 30 seconds. I appreciate shorter ads that just get to the point, but I do not appreciate longer ads. Those can play while I make a sandwich, get a beer, or go to the bathroom. That’s how it worked in the 80s and Gen X is kinda in charge now.
