Choosing the Bitter

Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 2 15 And to bring about his eternal purposes in the end of man, after he had created our first parents, and the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and in fine, all things which are created, it must needs be that there was an opposition; even the forbidden fruit in opposition to the tree of life; the one being sweet and the other bitter.

Mormons have a different take on the “forbidden fruit” than traditional Christians. We believe that it was necessary for the Plan of Salvation to choose the bitter. We embrace learning about the world even if the truths we discover are difficult or painful. Ignorance they say is bliss. The Garden of Eden was a blissful state of ignorance.  We are enticed by hard truths. One of my favorite quotes from a General Authority is “If we have the truth then it cannot be harmed by investigation. If we have not the truth then it ought to be harmed.” (J Reuben Clark)
