The boy next door asked for help removing a screw. He’s maybe eight so hasn’t developed a lot of muscle mass or spatial reasoning to get the torq right. He also had a screwdriver that looked like someone drove a tank over it. So I got a couple of appropriate screwdrivers and followed him to his project. I examined the screw and showed him the two screwdrivers and explained why one was more appropriate for the job. I took off the screw and realized it was not the main thing keeping the brace he wanted to remove in place. I explained what would have to happen to remove the brace and that I didn’t have that kind of tools. Stephanie also thought his parents might object. But I taught him some basic mechanics before I put the screw back in place.
