Ben knows I won’t give him his prescriptions until nine o’clock, so every night a little after nine he comes to me and says “Pills and light off.” After I dose him I stand next to him in his room and say, “I love you. Sleep well. Goodnight.” He says “Good night Daddy” or if he’s upset with me “Good night Mama.” Then I turn off his light and say goodnight one more time. Alex gets his prescriptions around ten thirty and usually crawls into bed right away. I say “I love you. Sleep well. Goodnight.” He is nonverbal but he understands words and I want him to have a similar routine to his brother, so I turn off his light and say goodnight to him again. They need as much stability in their lives as I can give them.
