I am different from anyone else. That really isn’t saying much since every individual is unique. The question is whether I am more unique. I joked with my dad today that we were embarrassingly white. I remember a joke book that poked fun at WASPs (white Anglo Saxon Protestants). I didn’t realize that all those jokes were about me until well after I left Protestantism. For a white guy I have remarkably little of the privilege that people insist I do. Maybe that’s not all that unique either. My job is out of the ordinary that’s for certain. Your boss probably doesn’t come into your room and hover until you get out of bed and get to work. The fact that I am an anti academic intellectual is also out of the ordinary. But again everyone has things about them that are out of the ordinary. What are some of yours?

Hmmm…I have very different physical abilities. I have super hypermobile joints and chronic headaches.
I like “anti-academic intellectual”. I have had the opportunity to spend many years in academia, and I loved it. I studied math and philosophy.
However I have been a homemaker (with odd jobs on the side…) for 20 years now. I can see how infuriating some academics are. They have superiority complexes all the while many are quite protected from common life.
There is also a system of monopoly where if you have the $, you can get the credential and very talented and smart people who simply can’t get that credential are completely blocked out.

The part where their ideas are protected from the common life is what really gets to me. Some things seem really good on paper but making those theories into actual results is either impossible or terrifying. I loved the Communist Manifesto when I read it in college. There are people who swear by it beyond any sense of how history shows it functions in a real human system. Some really bad ideas live on college campuses because the ivory tower insulates them from the harm they deserve.
