I’m still playing a lot of Colonization Classic. There are four skills that can only be learned from the natives. So I speak with every village and city to see if they train one of those four, and if it’s one I still need then I send a free colonist or an indentured servant to learn it. There is one very rare exception. If an untrained colonist farms a crop in an exceptional square they can again very rarely master the skill through experience using it. I haven’t found any natives who teach cotton planting but today a free colonist learned the skill through one of those lucky breaks. Stephanie pointed out how ahistorical that was, but I’m still glad the game works that way.
