Social Trust

I’m at the laundry mat. There are people here. They are busy with their own lives and business. But I have very little social trust. Strangers are dangerous and most theft is crime of opportunity. The people here seem decent, but I don’t like putting down my phone and I’ve got my bottle of detergent covered. I’m sitting in front of all our stuff in the corner dryers.

My parents are amazing people, but they conditioned me to distrust people. They didn’t do it on purpose. I don’t think they have the existential dread of leaving things unguarded. But they brought 40 “brothers and sisters” into our house growing up, and my things walked away on a regular basis. I was told to be a Christian about it. So I’m guarding my stuff at the laundry mat.
