It is my understanding that people behave better when they believe they are being watched. They don’t have to actually be watched for them to censor behavior that they wouldn’t do while being watched. This is why I am pro God whether there is a God or not. A person who puts his hand on a Bible, swears to tell the truth, and believes that the God of the Bible will hold them accountable for lying is less likely to lie. I have problems with the biblical God. The whole book is pretty gruesome and I really wish people believed in a more modern God. And again it doesn’t matter much to me if that God exists. In some ways it’s better for the purposes of social cohesion if no actual God does exist and people feel accountable to an ideal God. If you happen to think an ideal God does in fact exist, good for you. And probably good for me too because He’s watching how you interact with me.
