Worth and Worthiness

I don’t believe people are created equal, I think it is provably true that we don’t end up equal, and I don’t think we should try to reverse engineer equality. Some people are smarter than me, some people are more creative, some people are more generous, and some people have more influence. Those aren’t the only things that make someone worth more than someone else but it’s a good starting list. Danny likes to remind me that I’m not worth anything. In some ways I think he is right. I’m an insignificant blip in an unfathomably big universe. So maybe I shouldn’t compare my worth to the rest of you insignificant blips. But there is an greater insignificance that weighs on my soul: Worthiness before God. As Paul put it all sin and fall short. Alma adds that we should acknowledge our unworthiness before God at all times. I long for a god that needs me, but one probably does not exist.

  1. Try to keep in mind that the Church’s idea of worthiness involves committing genocide when a prophet tells you God said to do so.

    1. I don’t know of any commands from LDS prophets to commit genocide.

      1. Moses isn’t a LDS prophet anymore?

      2. Moses (if he even existed) was wrong. The New Testament and the Book of Mormon both abrogate genocide. I also eat shell fish so fuck Moses.

      3. Joseph Smith claims to have had a vision of Moses. He is recognized as a real prophet by the church.

      4. Jesus saw Moses too. I’m pretty sure Jesus takes precedence over Moses on the issue of destroying entire nations.

      5. I absolutely agree, but the Church does not acknowledge the dissonance.

      6. Most Christians play fast and loose with the Old Testament. An inerrent view of the Bible leads to justifications for things like Manifest Destiny and the Atlantic Slave Trade. It makes me sad that Salt Lake seems to want to make all the same mistakes. Brother Joseph was above that. Brother Brigham fell into the traps about which you complain. I don’t have a solution to unsaintly action of Saints.
